Ce qui se passe

Autochthonous chikungunya transmission is active in metropolitan France in 2026, which is unusual but not unprecedented. The clearest official notices show local transmission foci in Occitanie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, with the Occitanie bulletin covering the period from 1 May to 5 October 2026. As of 7 October, Santé publique France reported 49 autochthonous cases in Occitanie; as of 2 October, Nouvelle-Aquitaine reported 13 identified autochthonous episodes, 12 still active, plus 22 imported probable or confirmed cases; and a Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur bulletin listed local cases in Cavalaire-sur-Mer and Saint-Raphaël. Media coverage cited 145 chikungunya cases and five deaths in metropolitan France, unverified, and the national total was not reconciled in the official material reviewed here. Officials are carrying out regional surveillance, separating imported from autochthonous infections, and tracking which local episodes remain active.

Qui est touché et comment cela se transmet

Chikungunya is a viral disease spread mainly by Aedes mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Local spread can start when an infected traveller arrives in a place where these mosquitoes are established and conditions are suitable. The illness is known for sudden fever and severe joint pain, and the joint pain can last for months or longer. WHO says severe disease and deaths can occur but are typically rare, and are reported more often in older adults, infants, and people with underlying conditions or other severe disease.
