Ce qui se passe
Costa Rica is monitoring a hepatitis A outbreak in 2026, with the clearest reporting placing most cases in San José province. A 21 September 2026 media report said Costa Rica Ministry of Health surveillance had counted 772 confirmed cases nationwide through epidemiological week 32, including 562 in San José province, 61 in Cartago, and 60 in Alajuela, but that ministry bulletin was not directly retrieved. The latest figures available here are media reports of 1537 confirmed cases and 23 suspected cases, unverified. The same media report said officials had not found evidence that one common water source explained the wider increase, although one capital-area cluster reportedly involved water-system contamination. CDC posted a Level 1 travel notice on 18 September 2026 for hepatitis A in Costa Rica, and no quarantines, closures, or travel restrictions were reported in the retrieved documents.

Qui est touché et comment cela se transmet
Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by hepatitis A virus, and WHO says it is usually acute and self-limiting rather than a lifelong infection. The virus spreads mainly by the fecal-oral route, including close personal contact, contaminated food or water, dirty hands, and some sexual contact. Risk is higher for unvaccinated people in close-contact settings, and WHO notes travellers to areas of high endemicity among the groups at risk. Vaccines are available, and WHO says they should be used for prevention and outbreak control.
