Ce qui se passe
Measles resurgence is being tracked worldwide because outbreaks keep appearing where vaccination gaps have opened, rather than because the virus itself is new. WHO’s published outbreak notices describe major activity in the Region of the Americas in 2025, a nationwide outbreak in Bangladesh in 2026, a large outbreak in Morocco that began in October 2023, and an unusual event in the United States notified under the International Health Regulations. The latest figures on this page are mixed: officials report 4 deaths, while media report 10,227 confirmed cases, 92 suspected cases, 200 hospitalised, and 914 deaths, all unverified; media also report 198 additional confirmed cases this week. In the last week, media coverage has focused on the United States, with outlets citing officials saying New York declared a disaster emergency and Pennsylvania passed 1,000 cases, while a smaller cluster was also reported in South Australia. Officials are responding with vaccination campaigns, case isolation, contact tracing, laboratory confirmation, surveillance, infection prevention and control, and support for hospitals, and WHO has described large-scale response measures in Bangladesh, Morocco, and across the Americas.

Qui est touché et comment cela se transmet
Measles spreads mainly through the air and respiratory droplets from an infected person. WHO says about 90% of non-immune people exposed to an infectious person are estimated to become infected. It can affect people of all ages, but severe illness is more likely in children under 5, malnourished children, people with vitamin A deficiency, and people with weakened immune systems. Prevention depends on vaccination, and WHO says two doses of measles-containing vaccine can prevent the disease.

Ce que nous surveillons
- Whether the current U.S. outbreaks turn into sustained multi-state community transmission.
- Updated primary official totals from the United States, Bangladesh, and other affected countries, given conflicting media figures.
- Whether Bangladesh’s outbreak has fallen substantially since WHO’s April 2026 notice or is still continuing at major scale.
- Whether WHO publishes a newer multi-country measles risk assessment beyond the 2025 Americas and 2026 Bangladesh notices.
- Spread into new under-vaccinated communities during travel and school seasons.
