Что происходит

Since 6 October, reports from Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, have centered on a possible plague-linked pneumonia event, but as of 7 October there is still no official confirmation of plague. Russian authorities have told WHO there are 0 confirmed plague cases there, and some reports say WHO was also told there are 0 suspected cases. At the same time, media reports describe a laboratory employee dying from pneumonia of unknown origin and restrictions at some facilities in Irkutsk Oblast, while officials deny a plague threat and say some reports of sanitary controls are false or exaggerated. The latest figures remain split: official figures are 0 confirmed cases and 0 suspected cases, while media report 2 deaths, unverified, 200 hospitalised, unverified, and 200 contacts under observation, unverified. WHO is monitoring the reports, and local follow-up of contacts has been reported, but no public laboratory confirmation of Yersinia pestis has been reported.

Кто подвержен риску и как передаётся

Plague is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It is usually a zoonotic infection involving small mammals and their fleas, and people can be infected by flea bites, direct contact with infected animals or materials, or by inhalation. The pneumonic form can spread from person to person through respiratory droplets. The incubation period is usually 1 to 7 days depending on the route of exposure, and WHO says pneumonic plague is almost always fatal if it is not treated promptly.
