正在发生什么

Nicaragua is dealing with an active chikungunya outbreak, with media reports citing figures from the Ministry of Health. Those reports describe sustained transmission during 2026, with a marked rise in recent weeks rather than a few isolated cases. Media reports say Nicaragua had accumulated 3,109 chikungunya cases in 2026 as of 20 September, including 2,122 detected in the previous six weeks. A later media report said 221 chikungunya cases were recorded in the epidemiological week ending 26 September, 22 more than the week before; no primary official bulletin was retrieved in the available material to show deaths, hospitalizations, the share that were laboratory-confirmed, or a department-by-department breakdown. Media reports say the response is focused on mosquito control, including house-to-house fumigation, vehicle-mounted spraying, and larvicide distribution.

谁会受影响以及如何传播

Chikungunya is a viral disease spread mainly by bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. People in places where these mosquitoes are established are at risk, and infected travellers can start local spread when they arrive in an area with competent vectors and a susceptible population. The illness usually starts suddenly with fever and severe joint pain, and WHO says the joint symptoms can last for months and sometimes longer. WHO also says deaths can occur but are typically rare, with severe disease reported more often in older adults, infants infected around birth, and people with other health problems.
